I have been struggling to find an idea for my nephews (2) birthday, I wanted to make something that was timeless, artsy and also functional. Most of what I try to make in my studio is functional since there are few people out there that have the money to spend on art. So I figured I would use the boys as my guinea pigs and resolve my problem of what to give them they would enjoy. I have been wanting to make a chess board for a very long time and I know the boys are avid chess players....but how to make something unique....
I was visiting a carpenter (cabinet maker) friend of mine one day and he had all this beautiful wood set to the side to burn...they were all cut offs from cherry and walnut cabinets that he was making at the time. I asked him if he wouldn't mind if I take some and he said help yourself.
